Buy Mode and Home Decor in Lagos Life: What to Buy and How to Become a Decorator

How Buy mode works, the furniture that pays for itself, NEPA-proof power, comfort upgrades worth the money, staff, pets, and how players get hired as interior decorators.
4 min read

Your home is where your Sim sleeps, eats, baths and, if you buy the right things, makes money. It is also the thing other players see when they visit, which is why decorating has become a real hustle between players.

How Buy mode works

Open Buy from the bottom bar (or press B on PC). The catalogue is split into tabs: Sleep, Kitchen, Bath, Comfort, Fun, Skills, Light, Decor, Pets and Luxury. Tap an item, then Place. You can drag it around, tap the floor to move it, or on PC use the arrow keys and R to rotate. Enter confirms. Walls, doors and room shapes come with the home, so bigger homes give you more to work with.

Things to know:

  • Selling back pays about 60%. A ₦1,100 kerosene stove sells for around ₦650–₦700. Do not treat furniture as an investment.
  • Wall paint (₦3,000) and floors (₦5,000–₦15,000) change a room more than most furniture for very little money.
  • Some items need power. When NEPA takes light, anything electric stops working unless you have a generator or solar.

Buy these first

These either fix a need faster or unlock income:

Total₦37,400
  • The laptop unlocks Practice Coding, Freelance Gig and the Instagram shop.
  • The mirror unlocks Practice Speech (Charisma Γ—1.3) and Hype Yourself.
  • The bookshelf unlocks Read Business Book (Hustle Γ—1.2).

Power: beating NEPA

Lagos Life simulates power cuts. You have three answers:

  • Rechargeable lamp (₦1,100): light only, works during outages.
  • Generator (₦14,400): runs everything, but you must Buy Fuel (₦1,200 for 8 hours).
  • Solar inverter (₦78,000): no fuel, no noise. The best long-term buy once you can afford it.

A recharge fan (₦18,500) keeps you cool when the light goes, which matters in a small room.

Comfort upgrades worth the money

Better versions of the same object restore needs faster. The game marks some items with a quality multiplier:

ItemPriceQuality
Gas cooker₦8,400Γ—1.15 vs kerosene stove
King bed₦28,800Γ—1.10 sleep
Big TV₦38,400Γ—1.40 fun
Home theatre₦280,000Γ—1.30
Oven range₦420,000Γ—1.25 cooking
OLED TV₦2,400,000Γ—1.60
Home cinema₦18,000,000Γ—1.80

The big TV is the standout value: ₦38,400 for 40% more fun per minute. Most luxury items above a few million are for show (and for decorators' portfolios).

Browse everything in the furniture database.

Pets

The Pets tab sells a cat (₦15,000), a dog (₦25,000) and a parrot (₦45,000). Playing with a pet fills Fun and Social, feeding costs ₦500, the dog can be walked around the street (Fitness), and the parrot can be taught Pidgin (a little Charisma). A pet is a cheap way to keep Social up if you play solo.

Staff

Once you are comfortable, hire help from Phone β†’ Staff:

StaffWage / weekWhat they do
🧹 House help (Mama Bisi)₦15,000A spotless house and fresh clothes every day you're home
πŸ‘¨πŸΎβ€πŸ³ Private chef (Chef Tolu)₦60,000A free good meal when you're home and hungry (up to 3 a day)
πŸ§‘πŸΎβ€βœˆοΈ Driver (Sunday)₦40,000Your car becomes "Driver" on the travel sheet: no fuel to pay and a quicker trip. Between cities, he drives you for a road allowance
πŸ’‚πŸΎ Security guard (Mallam Musa)₦35,000Robbers who try you get caught more often, and you sleep easy
πŸ‘©πŸΎβ€πŸΌ Nanny (Aunty Grace)₦45,000Feeds and plays with your babies whenever you open Family

A house help keeps the place clean and your clothes fresh; a private chef cooks up to three free meals a day; a driver pays your fuel and gets you there faster; security makes robbers more likely to get caught; a nanny looks after your babies. Wages are weekly and come out with your rent at the end of each week (Saturday), so only hire when your income covers them easily.

Becoming an interior decorator

Decorators are some of the best-paid players in the game, because rich players want beautiful homes and do not want to spend hours arranging them. How people get started:

  1. Learn the catalogue. Know what every item costs and looks like. Remember prices scale for rich clients (the "Big Man" multiplier), so your client's catalogue may show bigger numbers than yours.
  2. Decorate your own home first. It is your portfolio. Even a mini flat can look sharp with paint, a rug and good lighting.
  3. Get hired. Clients hire you through the … menu in a chat ("Hire them for a job" β†’ Decorator), through the Hustle app where players post jobs (some decorating jobs list ₦10M), or after seeing your ad in Lagos Gist.
  4. Price for the client. A mini flat in Mushin is not a Banana Island mansion. Start small and build reviews.

The same hiring system covers cooks, DJs, drivers, bodyguards, photographers and tutors, so the decorator route works for other skills too. If a job is called off after you were hired, there is even a court case type for unpaid Hustle work.

Numbers come from the live game build and may change after updates.
